Barcelona becomes this month the world capital of advanced computing

Three scientific events will gather more than 500 experts in supercomputing in the Catalan city

The city of Barcelona will become the next 15 days in the world capital of advanced computing with the organization of three scientific events that will bring together more than 500 experts in supercomputing.

More than half a thousand highly qualified computer scientists will visit the city of Barcelona this May in three events that have as their epicenter the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-National Center for Supercomputing (BSC-CNS).

The common objectives of these meetings, which will be held from today until May 23, are "the progress of research in advanced computing and how to maximize its usefulness for science and industry," the BSC reported.

HiPEAC, PRACE and more

The first appointment is a meeting of the HiPEAC network of excellence, which Barcelona has chosen to celebrate its "Computer Systems Week" and the tenth anniversary of the existence of this association, which was born with the vocation of promoting high performance computing and study and training on embedded systems.

"We are very pleased to see that Hipeac was a pioneer in predicting that the world of supercomputing and embedded systems would eventually converge," the director of the BSC-CNS and one of the founders of the network, Mateo Valero, told EFE.

"Now we see that this idea is already a reality and we have begun to explore the enormous potential of mobile platform technology for the supercomputing of the future, as demonstrated by the Mont-Blanc project led by the BSC," he said.

This event will bring together more than 300 high-level researchers, several of them awarded with the most prestigious awards in the world of computing and also representatives of leading European companies in the sector, from today until the end of this week.

The second call is a meeting to review 14 projects funded by the EU to be held in parallel to the Hipeac meeting. The objective of this review - which is unusual outside Brussels - is to analyze the progress of the investigations one by one underway and join forces to maximize its impact on European society and industry.

The third meeting is the scientific and industrial conference 'PRACEdays14', which will be held in the Catalan capital from 20 to 22 May with the participation of some 200 scientists. According to BSC, it is the first time that PRACE gathers industrial and academic users of high-performance computing in the same conference.

The theme of the conference is "HPC for innovation: when science finds the industry" and its objective is to strengthen innovation, knowledge transfer and competitiveness in Europe. "This year's program includes six high-level conferences, seven working groups in parallel, contributions from representatives of the European Commission and the intervention of the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela," Valero announced.
